Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Fox Theater, Boulder, Colo : Grace Potter & The Nocturnals performed at the Fox Theater on Boulder, Colorado on July 1, 2009. As always their performance was incredible. The band puts on an entertaining show, while rocking out in a way that I have not seen from any other modern artists. She takes the soulful sounds of Bonnie Raitt and mixes it with a classic rock feel and sound that you probably haven't heard anywhere else. Grace Potter (lead vocals, guitar, organ, etc), Scott Tournet (guitar), Matthew Burr (drums), Catherine Popper (bass), and Benny Yurco (guitar) come together to give the audience an unforgettable show. GPN's show is especially memorable, because of the small venues that they use, along with their ability to form a connection with their audience. Many of the people that I talked to at the show are veterans of previous shows. Highly dedicated fans will help to ensure a long-lived career in rock for the band.

The opening band at this concert was White Buffalo, a gritty power-trio, with a wide variety of emotion and depth to their music. They go from folky, mellow sounds, to 'George Thorogood' very quickly. It is always great to discover new music at a concert and be thrilled with the opening band.

James McMurtry, Bluebird Theater, Denver, Colo : What do you get when you put three old rockers on a stage in front of a crowd of Woodstock-generation fans??? You get a concert, like you won't see from the young guys. Real, weathered, without the glitz and glam of today's showbiz. A show where you can get so close to the stage, you can hear the artist singing over the amplifiers. Just the way it should be.

James McMurtry performed at the Bluebird Theater, in Denver, Colorado on July 14, 2009. He showed up with drummer, Daren Hess, and Bassist, Ronnie Johnson. Where were the keyboardist, the backup guitarist, slide guitarist, and backup singers? There aren't any. That's what's so great about James McMurtry. He's still running with a power trio, relying on talent alone, to put on a great show. He played many of his classics, along with some of his newer tunes. His honest lyrics, and natural sound make him a relic of music that will live on in fans seeking musical talent and cultural significance, before polished sounds with high studio technology. His 'what you see is what you get' style is undeniable and incredibly absent in today's music. I strongly recommend checking out just about any album from James McMurtry, because you can't go wrong with such a consistent and experienced talent.

Frozen Dead Guy Days, Nederland, Colo : What's the only town in the country where you can find a parade of Hearses, an Ice King and Queen, Alpacas, coffin races, a polar plunge, and a dead-frozen Norwegian named Bredo, all at the same event and not on Halloween? Nederland, Colorado, during the Frozen Dead Guy Days. A Norwegian, named Bredo Morstoel, had himself Cryogenically frozen, and was brought to Nederland in 1989, by his grandson in 1993. This bizarre story has spawned quite the following, resulting in a fun, easy-going festival in the town of Nederland.

This was the 8th Annual event, on March 7, 2009. The event has been running annually, since 2002.

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Denver, Colo : I had the opportunity to photograph Grace Potter & the Nocturnals in concert, at the Ogden Theater in Denver, CO, on November 8, 2008. Their live show rocks and has a lot more edge than their studio recordings. Grace Potter (vocals/guitar), Scott Tournet (guitar), Bryan Dondero (bass), and Matthew Burr (drums) give a show, like you probably haven't seen since the good ole days of The Pretenders, Bonnie Raitt, and Janis Joplin. The band opens up and shows us what we've been missing in music, since the 70s. Check out Grace Potter & the Nocturnals on the web at: http://www.gracepotter.com/

Zombie Crawl 2009, Denver, Colo : WARNING: the following image gallery contains graphic costume and makeup, depicting horror, death, and well.... zombies.
(Also see, Best of 2009 Zombie Crawl, by Peter Gibbons.)

Colorado seems to be home to numerous unique events surrounding the dead, or in this case, the 'undead'. The 4th Annual Zombie Crawl, in Denver, Colorado, occurred on Saturday, October 24, starting at 3pm. The events lasted well into the evening, with the spirit and left-over zombies crawling the 16th Street Mall, well after dark. As visitors and other innocent bystanders, unaware of the event's existence, began to witness the 1,000+ crowd of zombie-dressed individuals crawling the 16th Street Mall, curiosity allowed for some fun conversation and questions about what they were witnessing.

The event played out, starting with 'Zombie Makeup 101', which was followed by costume contests, a Thriller Dance (Michael Jackson), the Zombie Crawl starting at 6pm, ended with a concert by Boulder's Widow's Bane. Growing each year, the event was bigger than it has ever been, with an estimated 4,000+ participants. As gruesome as it may appear, the 2009 Zombie Crawl was a family friendly event, with many children and parents participating. There were countless amazing costumes and makeup jobs, making for a truly horrifying scene on the 16th Street Mall. Complements to all who participated, the time put into the event, and the peaceful manner in which it was carried out. The Denver Police Department, for their presence and invisibility during the event are also deserving of recognition.
